
The structure of the choeten was visualized out of a Buddhist treasure teaching of Dudjom Lingpa, a treasure revealer from Kham in Tibet. Later it was recognized by renowned religious figures like Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche and Meme Lam Sonam Zangpo.
The foundation ceremony was conducted on 15th March 1992 corresponding to the Water Monkey year.
It was built under the sponsorship of Her Majesty the Grand Queen Mother Tshering Yangdon Wangchuck to remove evil forces and promote peace, stability and harmony throughout the World.

As the first of its kind in the World to have been constructed the details and the architectural were drawn from scriptures as visualized by Dudjom Lingpa. The statue and paintings were done under the supervision of the Bartsham Lam Kuenzang Wangdi.
It is a three storied structure with a dome on top designed with thirteen circular rings and crowned by an umbrella, sun, moon and the jewel pinnacle.
It was completed in 1999 and in the same year was consecrated in the presence of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the queen mothers and members of Royal family.

It houses several relics. The ground floor contains images of all the manifestations of Dorji Phurba (Vajra Kilaya) a dagger of non-duality in it’s grandest forms.

Besides many other rituals, a consecration ritual is performed to invoke the blessing of the wisdom of Dorji Phurba, which is described as one of the most sacred structures of Vajrayana Buddhism.
